Microbes: Life on Earth, Extreme Environments, & Astrobiology |
| |
What kinds of life inhabit extreme environments? How do they survive? What significance does this research have for the history of life on Earth and future studies on other planets? The discovery of a Martian meteorite in the Antarctic with evidence of microbial life resulted in a new field of science called Astrobiology. The implications of this work have far-reaching significance for understanding the history of life on Earth!
About the speaker:
Alison Murray is an Associate Research Professor in the Division of Earth and Ecosystem Sciences. Her areas of expertise include microbial diversity and evolution, archaeal and bacterial ecology, microbial genomics, specifically, functional and comparative genomics and development of molecular biology techniques to solve ecological problems. She studies the influence of extreme environments on microbial community structure and function.
Murray holds a B.A. from California Polytechnic State University in Biochemistry, Masters degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from San Francisco State University and a Phd Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology from University of California, Santa Barbara. She also did postdoc work at Michigan State University in Microbial Functional Genomics.

Solar Energy: Sense or Non-Cent$? |
| |
| |
What is the present status of solar energy? What are the future prospects for solar energy in the world of conventional and renewable energy sources? What is the cost of solar energy--is it competitive with other energy sources? How does solar energy relate to energy independence, public policy and environmental considerations?
All this and more will be discussed in an interactive and educational style, with the goal of educating while not advocating for or against solar energy.
This is the first of a new series in which local Institute Members (who are not experts on the subject) will study their subject in depth and develop a comprehensive report. This program will be a brief summary of all they have learned.
Future studies will include other sources of both conventional and renewable energy, and a new team is already working on the next study which will be on nuclear energy.
Our team of solar presenters are three retired locals: Bob Moore, an executive in high tech...Art King, a DPA firm partner...Don Priest, an executive in real estate companies.
This is a repeat by popular demand of our July 7 program.
Join us and see and learn about solar energy and consider participating in future energy study groups!
